Why We’re Fleeing:

The US-Afghan Withdrawal & Its Impact on Migration

A Conversation with Dr. Nayeb and Mahnaz Asghare

Many months have passed since the Taliban overtook the capital city of Kabul, seizing control over Afghanistan’s government. The lives of hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children were put at risk.

The world has witnessed panic ensue as people attempt to flee the country’s new rule. While media in the US has focused on the withdrawal, there has been a direct impact in the Greek refugee camps where we support programs.

On November 14 we held an event to deepen our understanding of this complex issue. We heard from Dr. Nayeb* and Mahnaz Asghare, both who fled Afghanistan.

Dr. nayeb*

Dr. Nayeb* is a professor of international law and human rights who was recently evacuated from Afghanistan. He holds a PhD from a prestigious Iranian university and is a professor at a private university in Kabul. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Nayeb has been involved with various human rights organizations. These include the Max Planck Institute for Peace and the Rule of Law, Hamideh Barmaki Institute, Swedish Committee, and Asia Foundation. Dr. Nayeb is currently in a refugee camp in a European country.

* At the request of Dr. Nayeb, we have changed his name due to security threats
