Hello,

I am running a half-marathon for World Refugee Day, and I need your support!

This summer I am working with Second Tree, an NGO based in Greece. Since arriving, I’ve been learning to convert miles to kilometers, meeting new friends from all over the world, and building skills to support a cause I care about.

Second Tree works on-the-ground in refugee camps to provide language lessons for kids, self-advocacy classes for adults, and plan community events like market trips and sports days. Second Tree also trains organisations across Europe to break down stereotypes around newcomers and share our community engagement/feedback model.

My role at Second Tree gives me the chance to engage with both ideas and people. This includes doing research to support our academic-theoretical side, working in our educational programs, and planning fun events like our upcoming annual beach day!

With World Refugee Day coming up on June 20th, I am training for a half-marathon to raise money for our cause. My lovely colleague Emma, designed a route that starts at the Municipal (Immigrations) Office in Perama, then continues to the Katsikas camp (13 km), and ends at the Ioannina local market (9km). The run is 21.5 kilometers total; the length between these locations demonstrates the physical isolation and poor access to crucial resources that newcomers often face.

I am asking you to donate if you can (any amount is appreciated!) and spread the word. Donations are made to Second Tree US, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports Second Tree’s work in Greece. Every contribution goes towards making the world a more equal and just place for refugees.

Love,

Helen
